Face powder is a cosmetic powder applied to the face to set foundation after application. It can also be reapplied throughout the day to minimize shininess caused by oily skin. There is translucent sheer powder, and there is pigmented powder. Certain types of pigmented facial powders are meant be worn alone with no base foundation. Powder tones the face and gives an even appearance. Besides toning the face, some SPF based powders can also reduce skin damage from the sun and environmental stress. It comes packaged either as a compact or as loose powder. It can be applied with a sponge, brush, or powder puff. Uniform distribution over the face is achieved easier when a loose powder is applied.
Because of the wide variation among human skin tones, there is a corresponding variety of colors of face powder. There are also several types of powder. A common powder used in beauty products is talc. Brands like Bare Minerals contain natural mineral ingredients. They promote their product as being safe and calming for rosacea, as well as improving wrinkles and skin that has been over exposed to sun and has hyper pigmentation. Powder is a very popular type of make-up and is used by all types of women.
Facial powder is very similar to body or baby powder, in that it is absorbent and provides toning to the skin.
Powder puff
Powder puffs are pieces of soft material used for the application of face powder. They may be shaped as balls or pads.
Historically, powder puffs have been made of very fine down feathers, cotton, fine fleece, etc. In modern times synthetic materials are widely used for powder puffs.
In addition to softness, an important characteristic of powder puffs is their intake ability, i.e., the ability to hold powder. It was reported that for synthetic fibers important factors in desiging high-intake powder puffs are mostly geometric ones: fiber diameter, pile length, and space between fibers, with little dependence on material factors.
Powder puffs have been used as a stereotype image for soft, careless femininity, as seen, e.g., in the term "Powder Puff sports", including collegiate sorority flag football leagues. The name of the Powerpuff Girls is a pun with word "powderpuff".
Baby powder
Baby powder is an astringent powder used for preventing rashes on the area covered by a diaper (see diaper rash). It may be composed of talc (and also be known as talcum powder) or corn starch.
Talc
Talc (derived from the Persian via Arabic talq) is a mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate with the chemical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. In loose form, it is the widely used substance known as talcum powder. It occurs as foliated to fibrous masses, its monoclinic crystals being so rare as to be almost unknown. It has a perfect basal cleavage, and the folia are non-elastic, although slightly flexible. It is sectile and very soft, with a hardness of 1 (Talc is the softest of the Mohs' scale of mineral hardness, and can be easily scratched by a fingernail). It has a specific gravity of 2.5–2.8, a clear or dusty luster, and is translucent to opaque. Its colour ranges from white to grey or green and it has a distinctly greasy feel. Its streak is white.
